Sometimes there is only a pole between survival and starvation. For Jessica Hughes, this is her reality.
At 21, she’s single-handedly supporting her 2 younger brothers and her 4-year-old daughter while paying off her deadbeat mother’s gambling debts.
Her life may seem like crap to others, but Jess knows it could be worse.
Then, Hunter O’Shea walks back into her life and drops a bombshell – a secret that could destroy everything they once had.
Once again, Jess finds herself picking up the pieces of her broken heart.
Will Hunter find the courage to claim the family he never knew he needed?
Or will Jess move on before he gets the chance?
FIVE 🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩 hats from Hatter! Three of my favorite things in one book! Second Chances, single parents, and big loving families. There’s not one thing about this book I didn’t love. As a matter of fact, I loved how unique it was. While still sweet, this was not a sugary instantly perfect book. This was real. Full of emotion, real people living real lives, struggling surviving overcoming, and doing it all with love. I couldn’t get enough!
Jess is now one of my all time favorite women. Her strength was incredible. Her drive to be more and make sure her brothers and daughter had more than she did was so strong. She didn’t hang her head in shame, she didn’t sit back and wait for someone to save her, she pulled up her big girl panties and did what she needed to do to take care of everyone. Even with all that strength and all that was thrown at her, she wasn’t bitter or cold, she had one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever read. She was so loving and sweet to everyone in her life, from her children to her friends she loved them all fiercely.
I actually enjoyed the slow build between Hunter and Jess. Normally I’m a lover of instalove, but these two had a lot of things to fight through before they could be the amazing couple they are. I truly felt it made them more real. After everything that happened, they loved each other but they had to heal those wounds first. Once they do though, you won’t be disappointed I promise.
4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars from Ari
The Secrets of Life by K. L. Humphreys was my very for book by the author and I really enjoyed the writing, characters and overall story. Definitely looking forward to reading more books in the future. Especially since this is book one in a series!
Gah! Where to start? Let’s start with the wonderful Jess. Strong, relentless, driven, and with a heart the size of Texas! She’s a force to be reckoned with and such an amazing character. I admired her from the very first page and grew to love her more and more with each turn of every page.
Now this is probably just me because I do love me an insta-love type of connection, so it was no surprise that I was a little disappointed that it’s so far into the book by the time Jess and her daughter’s father, Hunter, actually get together. Talk about a slow burn. Hunter is mostly a jerk for the majority of the book, but he does redeem himself in my eyes and I loved him as a dad to Emme.
Overall this was a story of family and the love, strength, loyalty and people that make it what it is. Beware! This book will hit you straight in the feels. K. L. Humphreys’ writing engulfs you and it’s like you’re there living moments with these characters that you’ve gotten to know and have become family. I enjoyed the book and I’m excited for the next book in the series. 4.5 stars.

KL Humphreys was born in London, England but now lives in Ireland with the love of her life and her baby girl. In a way, the world has him to thank for her Debut Novel Deadly Hunt. After years of thinking about writing the story that had been dying to get out of her head, she finally confided in her other half. He gave her all the encouragement she needed to get the story out, he has been with her every step of the way.
K.L Humphreys loves music, especially pop, R’n’B and rap and if she’s writing you will find it playing somewhere nearby. She also loves all romance novels but of course, Romantic Suspense is her go to genre. When she isn’t writing it…it’s a good bet she is curled up somewhere reading it. If she doesn’t have a book in her hand, you might want to check to make sure she isn’t sick.
